Each type of mulch is generally as effective as the other. The main difference between mulches is their appearance and texture. Mulching is a vital component of good gardening, providing that professional finish. Mulching dramatically suppressed weed growth, prevents soil erosion and insulates the soil from rapid temperature changes.
Most importantly, mulching conserves water by reducing evaporation from your soil. Mulching is highly recommended as a way to reduce excess water consumption. When using mulch, it is recommended to maintain a thick layer of 50mm – 100mm (2 inches – 4 inches).
Don’t skimp! Applying too little is the same as applying none at all. Don’t mulch heavily around the base of young trees or shrubs – their bark needs sun and air to develop and maintain healthy growth.
